File Conversion

I have been struggling with this assignment for the last couple of days. After reading some of the posts, I downloaded MOYEA Video Converter - Free Trial. I was unable to convert my swf file because it was on my FTP at Fairmont State and I could not move it from one place to the next and still get it to work properly.

JING Movie

I really liked this movie feature - of course I stayed with my cruise ship theme and featured the ship we will be sailing on in June 2010. I was able to add voice and then mute the sound when I was finished. The only thing I didn't like was that in the top left hand corner of the movie it showed the words "pause" and "mute" at the times I used those features. Perhaps there is a way to edit that out but I didn't find it. JING MOVIE

JING Picture

I used this feature to enhance an assignment given to my Business and Computer Applications students. I like to put a finished document on the whiteboard for my students to look at while they are working. Using the features of JING I was able to label each section along with the requirements. VERY NEAT TOOL!

Intel Week 2

My ranking project asks the students to decide which one of the Microsoft Office programs are the most important. Once you are on the INTEL RANKING TOOL website, choose student log-in.
The teacher ID is: jhmoore@access.k12.wv.us
The team ID's are passwords are: Freshman, 1 - Sophomores, 2 - Juniors, 3 - Seniors, 4. I also put the names of each student under their category heading so they would know they were in the right place.

This is a JING image of my ranking activity.

This is a JING image of the results from Team Juniors.

Intel Week 1 - Continued

Our highest correlation was with team 3, at .70.

As for the group average we were right in the middle, at .50.

Intel Week 1

We decided to go with majority rule for our group ranking. As shown in the graphs (made by JING) we had a low correlation tie (.30) with three teams: Team 2, Team 5, and Team 6.

What Caused the Civil War?

1. Economic Differences: After the invention of the Cotton Gin, cotton became very profitable. Many plantations decided to move from other crops to cotton to cash in on the profits. This move produced a greater need for large numbers of cheap labor (slaves). Although the southern economy relied strictly on cotton, the northern economy was based more on industry. While northerners were focusing on city life and people of different classes and cultures working together, the south held onto an old-fashioned social order.

2. States Rights: Many people felt that the “new” US Constitution ignored the rights of states to act independently. They wanted the states to retain the right to accept or reject certain federal acts (nullification). When nullification did not work and the states felt no longer valued, they moved toward succession.

3. Slavery: As America expanded, so did the fight about whether or not new states admitted to the union would be slave states or free. Although acts such as; The Wilmot Proviso (which would ban slavery in the new lands) and The Compromise of 1850 (to deal with the balance between slave and free states) were proposed, the fight still raged on.

4. Rise of Abolition Movement: As the northerners became more united in their stand against slavery, sympathies grew for abolitionists and hard feelings developed against slaveholders. Tensions further increased after the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act which held people responsible for keeping escaped slaves, even if they lived in a non-slave state.

5. Election of Lincoln: Southerners believe that Lincoln was anti-slavery and in favor of Northern interests.
